Mitchelton Branch Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Today, Meals on Wheels North West Inc’s Mitchelton branch celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary of opening. In that time, the branch has delivered over 1.5 million meals to residents of Mitchelton and the surrounding suburbs.

The day was celebrated by a lunch hosting current and former staff and volunteers, as well as special guests including Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, long time supporters of the service Mark Furner MP, Tim Mander MP, and Councillor Andrew Wines, and Meals on Wheels Director Peter Mann.

In his remarks during the event, CEO Alexi Paasonen commented on the dedication of volunteers over the last 50 years.

Organisations like ours survive on the passion and commitment of volunteers. For the last 50 years, thousands of members of our community have come together to face the challenges of the day, and ensure the service is there for the generations to come.”

Mr Paasonen’s comments come at a time when the Aged Care industry is facing radical reforms led by the Federal Government, with the funding system redesign scheduled for implementation in July 2024.

Mr Paasonen went on to say “Our organisation is facing some of the largest challenges of the last half century. It is our obligation to the work done by those before us to position ourselves not just to survive these, but to thrive. To improve the quality of service that we have to offer and ensure the continued operations of our organisation into the future.”

The occasion was also celebrated by Meals on Wheels Queensland in the Annual Report 2021/22.
